I have been practicing Nichiren Buddhism for 8 years now. I always wanted to share and introduce my friends and family to this Buddhism. However, I never had the courage to reach out to them.
A few years ago I had the greatest fortune of sharing this practice with one of my now closest friend. This friend and I had lost touch completely after I relocated to US. I am really grateful to a common friend who connected us back again. I could not believe the life-state my friend was in having lost her husband in an accident just after 2.5 years of marriage and at a young age of 28. She had lost interest in everything and thought her life was over. I felt so much compassion for her and immediately shared the practice with my friend. She did not understand why I was sharing this Buddhism with her when the worst that could happen to anyone had already happened to her. Losing your closest companion, a life partner, is one of the greatest miseries one can experience.
She started questioning me if by practicing this Buddhism her husband will come back to her. I was speechless after hearing this and realized I needed to be there for her but not talk about this Buddhism. I fiercely started chanting for her to become absolutely happy through this practice and transform her life.
I chanted for her to move to a different country and start her life fresh. Within 6 months of this vigorous chanting, she moved to Singapore with a new job. New country and job definitely helped her see the brighter side of life. However, within a year all the excitement started to fade into loneliness.
I decided not to give up on my friend and kept in touch with her through phone calls and texts.
Every time I talked to her I shared President Ikeda’s encouragement or someone’s experience with her. Despite all this my friend was once again going into low life state where she wanted to end her life. One day when we were talking she was at her lowest point and I asked her to start chanting everyday just for 10mins for 1 month and see the change in herself. I didn’t know she would take it seriously.
After a few days she contacted me to share how much better she felt ever since she started chanting. She decided to go to the meetings and get connected with members. She is a now a very active Soka member with Singapore Soka Association, SSA.
This was such an enlightening experience for me as well. I never thought I could introduce someone to this practice from so far away. Without being in someone’s immediate environment it’s always difficult to share the practice but “not impossible”.
This is why I practice this Buddhism, “to make the impossible possible”.
Also, I could experience the joy of having chanted for someone’s victory and seeing it all happen in reality. Her Victory in taking up the practice and feeling happy once again in life, actual became my Victory.
And so I feel connected to the vision of TogetherWeChant.com, “Your Victory is My Victory”!
Pres. Ikeda says, “The course of our lives is determined by how we react – what we decide and what we do at the darkest of times. The nature of that response determines a person’s true worth and greatness.”
